Frequently asked questions
What is LOLER testing?
Often confused as an 'insurance inspection', a LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) test, also referred to as a LOLER inspection, is a thorough physical examination of lifting equipment to ensure its safety and compliance with regulations.
LOLER tests focus exclusively on the safety and integrity of lifting equipment, checking for wear and tear, defects, and compliance with legal standards. LOLER examinations are a legal requirement to maintain the safety and reliability of lifting equipment, helping prevent accidents and injuries.
Testing is often provided by insurance companies however, independent companies such as LiftTech Inspection Services offer LOLER testing on all plant types and pass on large savings on inspection fees. Our reports fully meet the terms of business for all insurance policies.
Can you do your own LOLER examination?
Conducting your own LOLER examination is strongly discouraged due to the critical importance of impartiality and objectivity in the inspection and decision-making process.
An independent LOLER inspection company, like LiftTech Inspection Services, ensures impartiality and adherence to strict regulations. Attempting a self-inspection may lead to oversight of critical safety issues and legal non-compliance with an inspector potentially signing off their own work. Proving impartiality in an organisation is far harder than simply showing the HSE an employee's 1-day LOLER course certificate.
Relying on experienced professionals for LOLER examinations like LiftTech Inspection Services' award-winning Engineer Surveyor is the safest and most responsible approach to ensure equipment safety and regulatory compliance.
Who can do a LOLER test?
A LOLER examination must be conducted by a competent and qualified individual with the necessary knowledge and experience in the specific lifting equipment. This typically includes certified inspectors or engineers who are impartial enough to make objective decisions and well-versed in LOLER regulations having received specific training in this field.
Hiring an independent LOLER inspection company like LiftTech Inspection Services ensures an unbiased and objective evaluation, as they are not affiliated with maintenance or repair services. LiftTech Inspection Services has an award-winning, SAFed qualified Engineer Surveyor so rest assured, you are in safe hands.
How much does a LOLER examination cost?
The cost of a LOLER examination can vary depending on several factors, including the type and quantity of equipment to be inspected, its location, and the complexity of the inspection.
It's essential to consider that investing in regular LOLER examinations is not only a legal requirement but a preventative measure that can ultimately save costs by avoiding accidents, downtime, and potential compliance issues.
LiftTech Inspection Services Ltd can provide specific pricing based on your needs and remember, we offer large savings compared to national insurance companies.
What falls under LOLER?
Lifting equipment that is subject to LOLER regulations includes a wide range of machinery, such as cranes, hoists, forklifts, and even simple lifting accessories like slings, shackles and chains.
If the equipment is used in a professional or industrial setting, it likely falls under the LOLER requirements. Regular examinations are a legal requirement and crucial to identify any defects, wear, or damage that could compromise safety during lifting operations.
If you are unsure of your requirements, contact LiftTech Inspection Services to have your questions answered or to book a site audit.
How often should LOLER testing be done?
Many factors influence the interval of LOLER testing but as a rule of thumb, goods lifting machines are examined every 12 months, machines lifting persons every 6 months and lifting attachments which couple a load to a lifting machine are 6 monthly. Standard industry practice for vehicle lifts is a risk-assessed frequency of 6 monthly inspections due to the increased risk of working beneath a suspended load. Examples of each include:
Mobile crane (goods only) - 12 monthly
360 Excavator (crane duties) – 12 monthly
Fork Lift Truck (goods only) - 12 monthly
Hoists/chain blocks/pull-lifts/jibs - 12 monthly
Fork-Lift Truck (personnel lifting/Moffett/VNA) - 6 monthly
Passenger lift - 6 monthly
Mobile Elevating Work Platform - 6 monthly
Vehicle Lift (1/2/4/6/8 Post/scissor) – 6 monthly
Shackles/Chains/Slings/Attachments – 6 monthly
