LOLER stands for Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. It covers any equipment that is used to lift or lower loads, such as cranes, hoists, forklifts, and lifts. LOLER requires that lifting equipment is thoroughly examined by a competent person at least every 6 or 12 months, depending on the type of equipment or its intended use.

PSSR stands for Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. It covers any system that contains a fluid under pressure, such as compressed air, steam, and hot water. PSSR requires that pressure systems have a written scheme of examination, drawn up by a competent person, and that they are examined in accordance with the scheme at defined intervals.

• Hot water boilers, with temperatures above 110°C
